East Riding College Magazine, LIIAR analysis, Front cover and contents page
L-Language:
The main image on the front cover shows us a snowy (presumed) Berlin path with several students in a blacked out view so we can only make them out by the shape they are making. By using a distance shot they get more people inside the main image.
The main image takes nearly all of the space on the front of the magazine and only a small text, inside a black rectangle, is on top of the image. This is making the magazine cover plain and dull, because there is no text challenging each other for attention that makes magazines more appealing to the target audience.
The mast head is plain white text on a black background; this mast head does not try to stand out or even draws the eye of the viewer. If the mast head was in a different font and possible more or a different colour then it would be a mast head to use, however this cover is plain and dull like the house colour scheme is black and white.
The contents page is following the same dull and unappealing house colour of black with white; this is making it a very unattractive page however a green border around the simple list form contents table gives a splash of colour that does stand out and helps in brighten up this dull magazine.
The date of the magazine issue is pointing on a vertical level; this does make it less boring to read. However it is sticking to the same colour style as the mast head, and is not that much smaller than the mast head, so it is dull and takes the eye away from the masthead because they are almost identical in position, size and style.
The main image was supposed to be only a mid-range shot, so only the face and shoulders should be present in the image, and by using a far shot they have created a distant feel between the reader and the magazine.
When they created the main image they decided to have all the people in the, incorrect, far shot they were all facing away from the camera so when someone looks at the magazine they see the backs of people who are darkened out, this creates a distant feel that can make potential buyers not look twice because they don’t feel involved with the magazine that it isn’t connecting with them. If they had used the correct mid-range shot they could use eye contact to draw the viewers in to see what they had to offer them.
And the contents page has several images, but they are all neatly boxed off in a backwards L formation all within a thick black border. By doing that they have corralled the thumbnail images to separate areas, and keeping them boxed up so they can’t exert themselves and present what they are and what they are trying to say with their individual images.
I-Institution:
The magazine appears to be representing the East Riding College; I know this because the logo that has the name of the college in it placed at the bottom right of the front cover. They are showing the logo where majority of people turn the page so the reader can clearly see who the magazine is representing.
The magazine is using dull and boring house style colours of black and white, so when people see that the magazine represents the East Riding College they will automatically presume the college is also boring and dull just like how the magazine is presented.
I-Ideal-ology:
The magazine appears to try and promote people to go off and live life, I gather that information from the images and contents page because they are of academic achievements or events that symbolise freedom and wild.
I can see from the magazine that it is plain but encourages you to get out and go and aim for something, e.g. art exhibition or paintballing. These two events are images on the contents page, so we can see that the magazine has a boring appearance but does try to encourage people to aim high in its dull boring appearance.
A-Audience:
The audience is students, because on the contents page there are many references to student based enrichment and activity/events so I can assume this is a magazine aimed at the students of East Riding College.
By aiming it at students they need and have included events that could help with further education or careers. By inserting those inside a student aimed magazine it can become popular because students will be looking for ways to either get a job going or set off to higher education.
R-Representation:
The magazine represents the college as a dull and simple place, this is because of the simple colour style and font they are using to show us what the East Riding College have. But the lack of colour is dull and boring it does however have some colour on the contents page that does show us that they are not all dull.
The fact the main image has several people with their backs turned can set a double feeling, because the people in the image could represent that they are heading to a new brighter future, however due to the lack of contact or acknowledgement of the reader they could possibly be saying they don’t want to be involved with the viewer or even the college.
