Clash magazine Liiar analysis

L-Language
Front cover:
The mast head dominates the top left of the magazine cover making it an eye attractive area of the cover, plus the bright colour on the dark background makes it stand out and give it the edge it needs to be a hard hitting rock magazine.
The main image dominates the front cover and demands the attention with his bold display of his muscles and forming his arms into an original way to attract views to this new display for a front cover separating it from the rest of the competition like NME.
The grey background works well with the bright coloured text because it makes the text highlighted by the font colour being a bright colour. However the text is still readable because the brightness is not too high that it is unreadable on the front cover.
The use of pull out quotes on the front cover help the magazine sell the articles inside by giving a taster that can encourage the reader to purchase the magazine, these pull out quotes do not dominate the front cover however they do attract attention by being a bright colour surrounding the main image of the posing man.
The price is detailed as if it were a promotion, this gives it the attention it demands because of the bright colours used and the position (top right). By giving the price such an attractive front it gives away the price easily, but the price is lower than the competitions magazines so the fact Clash have advertised the price of their magazine the way they have it gives some incentive for readers to purchase that magazine as it is cheaper than the competition.
Contents:
The contents has a bright white background, this gives it a clean and pure feel to it. Since the back ground is a plain white colour it allows other colours to stand out and become more interesting due to the difference in colour and not a difference in brightness.
The contents has black text that sits will on the pale blue highlight all the background has been given to stand out from the white and give it its own place to display information. The page numbers are bright pink continuing the colour scheme that makes them stand out and links them to the magazine.
The use of thumbnail images with text explaining it below with the page number gives off more incentive to carry on reading as you would be curious to what the image represents and why it is displayed.
The small amount of bright colours used on the contents makes it look more attractive to the segments that are highlighted by the two bright colours. The colours used on the contents make the contents look more higher and pure due to the white and grey used giving the contents an legendary feel because it does not need colour to be a rock magazine.
Double sheet spread:
The main image is placed over two pages that gives it the importance and domination of the double sheet insert. It has full colour, however the image was taken in a dark place with one light lighting up the people from below giving them a above approach feel to them creating a connection with the readers.
The text and thumbnail images are moulded by the main image, this makes the double spread more appealing by a free form layout giving it a relaxed and casual feel towards the readers.
The colour scheme used on this double spread is bright and is the opposite to the image, this creates a contrast that attracts the readers into text and encourages them to read the whole article.
I-Ideology
The magazine has a bright aura to it that invites readers to be in to buy their magazine; because of the bright look and feel they can sell the idea of their magazine to an audience of light rock fans. My magazine will be the opposite, I will make my magazine to be a mix and contrast between dark and light colours. I am aiming to create a magazine that relates to the colour schemes rock bands AC/DC and Queen have, because I am creating a magazine about the whole rock genre and the contrast of colours will represent the differences whilst being different to attract the readers.
I-Institution
The magazine represents the company “Clash”, the magazine represents the company by using its name as the mast head and sending the information the company stands for out in a displayed way to advertise the information the company has gathered. My magazine will represent all that is rock in an layout and colour scheme that will give elements of rock out to symbolise what my magazine stands for.
A-Audience
The target audience for the Clash magazine is focused at fans of rock and darker genres of music, the age range would be aimed at people aged 16 to 24. I gather this from the articles and decency of the magazine. My magazine will be different because I will be for a wider and slightly different target audience.
R-Representation
The magazine represents the company Clash, who focus on the darker music genres that young children and older citizens would not enjoy. Since the magazine focuses on the music preferences that Clash have chosen. For my magazine the focus is on rock so my magazine will represent all that rock represents, in my case freedom and rocking out.
